SOLAR CELL PROJECT IN WEST PAPUA

Summary

In 2019, Save the World's Forests planned and fully funded a project in West Papua to assist a forest protection citizen's non-profit group, Papuan People's Network, JERAT.  The project was to install a solar electric system in the group's office.

By purchasing and installing a solar panel system on the roof of the Papuan People's Network office building, including an inverter, batteries and wiring, the group would no longer have to spend their funds on grid electricity, and they would also not be contributing to deforestation and global warming caused by using electricity generated from coal. Previous to this project, there were no solar panel systems in this region of West Papua.

Save the World's Forests co-designed the project with the Papuan People's Network.  It was such a success that within a few months, over a dozen other Papuans in the area saw the benefit of the solar systems, and purchased solar panels and installed them on their own homes and businesses so they could also save money on electricity.

Save the World's Forests hopes to work with the Papuan People's Network in the future to implement small hydro-electric projects and electric motorbike transportation, to further assist them in saving money and saving the environment by using green energy.

I.          Implementation of project

With the solar cells generating electricity for free, JERAT will save the electricity costs every month of 4-5 million rupiah. These saved costs are now used for other office operations and environmental projects.

The installation training activities and installation of solar cells were carried out for 4 days from September 24-27, 2019 which was carried out by 8 JERAT staff as follows:

Harun Rumabar

Ronal Manufandu

Bata Rumdas

Asmira

Tantri

Ibu Frits

Arki

Septer Manufandu

Firad Womsiwor

Frans

II.                  Result from Solar Cell Project

The electricity sourced from the newly installed solar cell installation meets the electricity needs of JERAT both for lighting and for office electronic appliances such as laptops, desktops and printers;

JERAT's solar cell office installation, with a capacity of 600 watts, is used for:

Ÿ         The lighting for the 10 rooms, including Finance rooms, Data Base, studio room, Meeting Room, Program Room, Kitchen, 2 Toilets, Director room, Administration room

Ÿ         Office terrace lighting

Ÿ         4 units of Desktop Computers include: Financial Desktop, Data Base, Audio Visual, and Desktop Mapping;

Funds used to run this project amounted to IDR 47,000,000 (USD $3,316.75) and IDR 1,000,000 ($70.57) balance.
