EXTRAORDINARY ANIMALS AND PLANTS OF YASUNÍ

RUFESCENT TIGER-HERON

Rufescent Tiger-Heron (Tigrisoma lineatum) Class: Aves, Order: Ciconiiformes, Family: Ardeidae, Genus: Tigrisoma, Species: lineatum

Rufescent Tiger-Herons have long, pointed bills used for catching fish. They have chestnut heads, necks, and chests with a white stripe running down their front sides. The rest of their bodies are brownish-grey. The plumage of immature Rufescent Tiger-Herons is quite different and consists of black barring on a light-brown base. It can take up to two years for these birds to reach maturity.

Rufescent Tiger-Herons wade near river banks and hide in undergrowth whenever they can. They hunt by standing still and waiting for prey fish to come close enough to be grabbed by their large bills. They are primarily a crepuscular species, meaning that they are most active at dawn and dusk.
