Persecuting the Waorani Leaders

With Legal Maneuverings, the FED Environmentalists Intend to Detain the Leaders of ONHAE

Quito-- April 3, 2006

From CONAIE Commission of Communications

On Saturday April 1, the police illegally broke up the local Waorani women’s organization and tried to detain the president of ONHAE, Vicente Nenkamo. This action has been promoted by a lawyer by the name of Kléber Casco as part of the maneuverings dictated by the Ecuadorian Sustainable Development Fund (FED), which is no more than a façade for the large environmental corporations. The maneuverings and aggressions are organized by Fabián Moreno and Tatiana Salazar, who are looking to destroy the indigenous organization so that they can steal the territories of the Waorani nation.

This aggression was rejected by the Waorani women, who expelled the police who were acting as criminals and violating the law, invading the area of the meeting without any judicial order. Vincent Nenkamo was saved and protected by the Waorani communities that have reaffirmed that they are not going to accept the illegal contracts and agreements that were signed by former leader Juan Enomenga, ceding 620,000 Ha of Waorani territory in Pastaza, Napo and Orellana.

On the other hand, the local chapter of ONHAE in Puyo has been invaded and taken in a violent and illegal manner by corrupt former leaders that are being paid by the environmentalists. Legal actions are being coordinated to respond to this aggression.

CONAIE reaffirms its support of the ONHAE government agreement, and denounces this violence and aggression, that will be confronted by our organization with the constitution and other international laws that protect the rights of the Indigenous Territories. CONAIE calls to the human rights institutions and organizations to coordinate their actions in defense of the Waorani Nationality and the other Amazonian indigenous nationalities that are being attacked by the environmental NGO’s that are attached to dark interests.

A single heart, a single fist, a single voice.
